6.2.07 : Flames Finish
Third at Speedway Classic
Saturday the O'Fallon Flames
and Crystal City represented the SLSL at the Speedway Classic
in Indianapolis, Indiana. 9 players from 5 cities throughout
the Midwest were in attendance for the one-day tournament.
The Flames played everyone once in the first round and recorded
wins over Amanda Ewer from Michigan (4-0), Barret Crites
(3-0) and Bryan Carter (5-0) from Indianapolis, Brian Bostleman
(2-0) from La Porte, and league mate Brad DeMunbrun (3-0).
Two dramatic 0-0 draws with Steve Laskey from Cincinnati
and Jon Schultz from La Porte and a 2-1 loss to Michigan's
Mike Ewer put the Flames in to the playoff round where they
met up with travel partner Brad DeMunbrun in the quarter-finals.
Two controversial first half
goals and two late second half goals put O'Fallon in to
the semi-finals with a 4-0 victory. In the semis they would
again meet up with former ASA National Champion Jon Schultz.
Having played to a scoreless draw in the opening round,
the match promised to be good. Another tightly contested
match saw Schultz score the only goal of the match early
in the second half.
All that left up for grabs was
pride and a little revenge was at stake when the Flames
met Mike Ewer in the 3rd place match. Looking to exact that
revenge for the opening round loss, O'Fallon scored in the
first minute of play. Another goal just minutes later put
the Flames in definite control of the match. At the end
of the half time break the man from Michigan could not answer
the bell and had to retire.
