3.11.06 : Flames Earn 3 Well Deserved Points At South County

Saturday the O'Fallon Flames went back out on the road travelling to South County for a match with Casey Blick and the South County Cosmos. Points are now at a premium in the few remaining days of the 2005-2006 SLSL season and the Cosmos were looking to steal some back from the Flames and seek some revenge from a 5-0 loss back in January at The Crematorium. With only 2 matches left in their season, O'Fallon was looking to grab as many points as they could and remain in the 4th spot in the SLSL standings.

The first half was played mostly in the Cosmos defensive half and the Flames managed to hit the same left post 6 times before they finally broke through in the 10th minute. After the frustration of playing down the left side, the Flames decided to play quickly up the right side of the midfield and caught the Cosmos keeper of guard and snuck a low shot past him for a 1-0 lead that they took to the break. "I think we chipped the paint off the left post in the first half today." Flames manager Jeff Drake said. "I'm expecting a bill in the mail from the South County groundskeeper for the new paint they'll have to put on this week."

The second half saw more of the same from O'Fallon, as they hit the left woodwork again twice early on. But in the 22nd minute the Flames went up 2-0 on nice cut shot from just out side the penalty arc that found the net just inside the near left post. Another late goal in the 29th minute made no doubts of the result and as the final whistle blew the Flames had earned themselves 3 well deserved points. "Any time you go out on the road you need to be ready for anything." Drake said after the match. "We could have easily got ourselves out of sorts with all the frustration of ringing the post in that first half, but our side kept their composure and did what needed to be done in the second half."

With the victory O'Fallon kept their stranglehold on the 4th spot on the SLSL standings table with only one match remainingin the season... a road match with their heated rivals, the Fenton Wanderers.
